About the Sierra Club
of/du Canada
The Sierra Club was founded by naturalist and writer
John Muir in 1892 to protect the wilderness of the
Sierra Nevada. Over the years, the activities of
the Sierra Club have expanded to include issues ranging
from climate change and energy to toxic chemical
contamination and loss of biological diversity.
The Sierra Club has been active in Canada since 1969,
working on matters of public policy and environmental
awareness. We have local chapters and working
groups across Canada.

Sierra Club of/du Canada's Mission
The Sierra Club of Canada's mission is to develop a diverse, well-trained
grassroots network working to protect the integrity of
our local and global ecosystems. The Sierra Club
mission focuses on five overriding threats:

About the Chinook Group
The Sierra Club of Canada's Chinook Group has been active
in Southern Alberta since 2001. As a part of the Sierra
Club of Canada, we believe in the power of the individual to make change.
Our mandate is to educate, lobby, and work together for change. We recognize
that we are not separate from the earth, but are one with it. With that recognition,
we believe that it is our responsibility to protect the earth and health of all
creatures living here.
Our goal is to ensure that future generations may enjoy this beautiful area in which
we are privileged to live; that we do not destroy its beauty, its diversity, and its
ability to sustain us. Therefore, our group is committed to protecting and improving
the environment and ecosystems of Calgary and Southern Alberta.
These past years have been tremendously successful for the Chinook Group.
As the years go by our membership continues to grow
steadily in numbers. We serve as a strong voice in educating the public and we also fill
a role of advocating for change.
Update on Campaigns and Outreach of the

TD Friends of the Environment and the Calgary

sprawl and waste management campaigns as well our
work with CPAWS, AWA, and the
Castle - Crown Wilderness Coalition for protection and
restoration of the Castle Wilderness.
- Our Outings
program plans exciting trips for our group, the
highlight usually being our annual High Trip retreat
in the fall.
- Our monthly meetings
continue with very informative guest speakers.
