The Alberta government has been rushing to grant leases to Shell, in the process they have broken
promises to protect this area. Shell's continued
natural gas activities in the Castle Wilderness
significantly contributes to the further degradation of
the region's ecosystem.
Tell Shell Canada to call off its
sour gas activities in the Castle Wilderness, send an
email to the President of Shell Canada, Premier Ralph
Klein, Alberta Environment Minister Lorne Taylor, the
Minister of Sustainable Development Mike Cardinal, local
MLA David Coutts, M.D. of Pincher Creek, Liberal Environmental Critic Debby Carlson, and
NDP Environmental Critic Doctor Raj Pannu. For tips on

Re: Phasing out of Shell's gas exploration in the Castle Wilderness
Dear Mrs. Cook,
I strongly encourage Shell Canada to stop gas exploration in the Castle Wilderness area.
Located in the southwest corner of the Alberta, bordering the Waterton-Glacier International Peace
Park and World Heritage Site, the Castle Wilderness (approx. 1,000 km2) is an ecologically significant
region.
The Castle has some of the highest diversity of animal and plant species in Alberta. The regions'
habitat and movement corridors are an important element for ensuring the health of large carnivore
populations in Southern Alberta, British Columbia, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. The Castle is also
vital for the ecological survival of the adjacent Waterton Lakes National Park.
The first well drilled in the Castle was in 1957. Since that time, over 50 more wells have been
drilled. These wells, and the associated development, have seriously degraded wildlife habitat and
corridors in the Castle Wilderness. Continuing development in the Castle will lead to increased
degradation and the eventual loss of animal and plant species in one of the few remaining wild areas
in Alberta's Eastern Slopes.
Shell has branded itself an ecologically friendly company, yet unfortunately in the Castle Wilderness,
Shell is not living up to this image. I encourage Shell to support a legislatively protected Castle
Wilderness, and to work closely and openly with local conservation and environmental groups to ensure that
protection of the area becomes a reality.
Yours sincerely,
