Andy Russell - I'tai sah kòp Park

Take the Momentum across the Finish Line!

It only takes dialing one fax number or a postage stamp and about 15 minutes, but it makes a HUGE difference. Please write, even if you've already sent a letter. More letters are needed to cheer Premier Klein and the Honourable David Coutts on across the finish line to establishment of this internationally significant park - Alberta's portion of the Crown of the Continent.

Please:

bulletPersonalize your letter with a few of your own thoughts.

bulletTake the time to send your letter by fax or mail, which has far more weight with the government than an email.

bulletAddress it to either Premier Klein or Hon. David Coutts depending on who replied to your first letter. If writing for the first time, write to the Premier unless you live in the Livingstone-Macleod constituency, in which case write to your MLA, the Hon. David Coutts.

Dear Premier Klein [Hon. David Coutts]:

[Use either 1st paragraph depending on whether you're responding to the reply you received or it's your first letter.]

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, it did not respond to my request for the establishment of the Andy Russell - I'tai sah kòp Park in tribute to Andy Russell and his wife Kay and in recognition of the Piikani First Nation.

It was wonderful to hear that you are considering establishing the 1,040 km2 (400 sq. mi.) Castle wilderness as a park in memory of Andy Russell and in recognition of the Piikani First Nation. I whole-heartedly support this.

While the Castle wilderness was considered years ago during the government's Special Places 2000 program, there is nothing residents or visitors can point to on an Alberta road map that says it's any kind of park. Yet such protection is surely warranted by its unsurpassed biological diversity, scenery, cultural values and importance as the headwaters for southern prairie rivers. The West Castle Wetlands Ecological Reserve is tiny, less than a square kilometer in size. The rest of the 1,040 km2 (400 sq. mi.) Castle wilderness is only a land-use zone (Forest Land Use Zone) without any of the protection, interpretation services and sustainable economic values offered by a park. In the Calgary region, one can point to four Wildland Parks, which total more than the Castle in size. Plus, there are four Provincial Parks and a Wilderness Area, and all this in addition to a national park more than 12 times Waterton in size. Please establish such benefits for the southwest and with that, a tribute for a "truly great Albertan" and protection for the most naturally diverse wildland in Alberta.

I encourage you to let the legends of the Piikani First Nation and the west that Andy Russell epitomized for the world live on by completing the job of establishing the Castle as a combined Wildland and Provincial Park. It'd be wonderful to hear such an announcement prior to this June 1st, the anniversary of Andy Russell's death.

I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,
