Presentation:
Ecological Grief and the Ecological Self -
Mishka Lysack |
|
|
| Description: |
Mishka
Lysack, an assistant professor in the Faculty
of Social Work at the University of Calgary
and a family therapist at the Calgary Family
Therapy Centre, will present on
"Ecological Grief and the Ecological
Self." Ecological grief is a term
used to describe the sense of loss, despair,
and grief that growing numbers of people are
feeling with respect to the loss of species
and the degradation of the environment, what
Macy calls a new pivotal psychological
reality.
The eco-philosopher and
environmental activist, Joanna Macy,
writes:
"Until the late
twentieth century, every generation
throughout history lived with the tacit
certainty that there would be generations to
follow. Each assumed, without questioning,
that is children and children's children
would walk the same earth, under the same
sky. Hardships, failures, and personal death
were encompassed in that vester assurance of
continuity. That certainty is now lost to
us, whatever our politics. That loss,
unmeasured and immeasurable, is the pivotal
psychological reality of our
time."

Documentary Night!!
Michael Franti's I know I'm Not Alone
|
| Description: |
Michael
Franti, world renowned musician and human
rights worker, travels to Iraq, Palestine and
Israel to explore the human cost of war with a
group of friends, some video cameras and his
guitar.
A compelling soundtrack,
visual and musical montages, and Franti's
intimate voiceovers make the film speak to the
MTV, X, Y, and Z generations, as well as to
baby boomers. A true armchair travel film
pulling the audience into these war zones in
the company of Michael's guitar, eloquence and
wit - you feel the humanity, artistic
resilience and sometimes horrific experience
of what it's like to live under the bombs and
military occupation.
With its guerrilla style footage captured in
active war zones, the documentary is unlike
the many academic and politically driven
pieces in the marketplace, instead of offering
the audience a sense of intimate travel and
the opportunity to hear the voices of everyday
people living, creating and surviving under
the harsh conditions of war and occupation. |

Please join us. Everyone is
welcome!
