Press Release
Sour Gas Information Night on October 21st to be
hosted by the Sierra Club of Canada Chinook Group
October 20, 2003
CALGARY - The Chinook Group of the Sierra Club
of Canada is hosting a Sour Gas Information Night. This
evening information session has been organized in response
to Compton Petroleum's application to drill six critical
sour gas wells just 1.1 km southeast of city limits. The
calculated Emergency Planning Zone for these wells is
about 15 km, which encompasses 250,000 people. As part of
the application, Compton has requested a reduced EPZ of
4.0 km.
"We felt we needed to get the word out to people
that it isn't okay to have sour gas wells in our
backyard" explained Brian Pincott of the Sierra Club
of Canada - Chinook Group. "We have gathered together
a group of people who have a lot to say, things that you
won't hear from the industry or from the EUB."
Guest speakers for the evening will be:
 | Andrew Nikiforuk, journalist and author. He
has won the Governor Generals Award for his book
Saboteurs: Wiebo Ludwigs War with Big Oil |
 | Gavin Fitch, an environmental lawyer with
extensive experience before the AEUB |
 | Barbara Graff, a fourth generation southern
Alberta landowner whose family was acutely impacted by
the oil and gas industry in 1998. Since 1999, Barbara
has researched the impact of industry on the lives it
effects |
The Sour Gas Information Night is Tuesday, October 21st
in the gymnasium at St Mary's College, 14500 Bannister
Road in Midnapore.
