Volunteer appreciation night and Xmas party!

The Chinook Group's annual Christmas potluck will be combined with our volunteer appreciation celebration and awards this year on the evening of Saturday, Dec. 15. Everyone is invited to share some snacks, beverages and good cheer at the home of long-time members Jamie and Cathy Noakes from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. RSVP (and obtain the address) by emailing Laura Hickman at: laura@sierraclubchinook.org

Our First Annual Volunteer Appreciation Night was a great success, with approximately half of our volunteers in attendance. We had food, prizes, and fun and I have to thank Nadine, Janice and Laura for all the ideas, inspiration, and help. Also a big thank you to our executive for all the great food, I think everyone was surprised with how good you all cook. Of course a bigger thank you again to everyone who came, without you these events can not happen, and I'd have a lot of chilli in the freezer!

The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the "Shirley Marion Volunteer Award" to... Shirley Marion! Shirley has volunteered at almost every event we have held over the past few years, and she has been there since day 1 (maybe 2). Over this time she's been a dandelion, chicken, and a great asset to all of the work we have done over the years. Thank You again Shirley for all that you do, and have done, over the years!

Ongoing Volunteer Positions

Waste Management Campaign Coordinator - Our Waste Management committee is actively seeking an individual interested in leading this campaign. The Waste Management group has had a great impact on Calgary's waste management policy, and has played an integral part in getting the city's recycling program expanded to meet the demands of our ever growing city. Currently, our program is looking at setting up school visits to talk to children about recycling. If you are interested in this position please contact Matt Lorenzi.

The Waste Management Coordinator is responsible for the oversight and guidance of a well established program with dedicated volunteers in place. Your main responsibilities are to schedule regular meetings with volunteers, and to liaison with local municipalities, NGO's, and other concerned parties.

Raffle 2005 Volunteers - We are preparing for our second raffle this spring, and we need some help. We are looking for people with ideas that can help make this years raffle an even bigger success than last year. You don't need to have previous fundraising experience (if you do have previous experience we'd love to hear from you of course) to help us out, I certainly have none. This is our most important fundraising event of the year and new ideas are vital to making the raffle a success.

If you can help out in any way please contact me or Joe Peters as soon as possible. Planning is currently underway and we are in the process of finding donors for this years raffle. As well, if you have any ideas of donors that may be interested in helping with prizes for this years raffle contact me or Joe Peters with them as well.

Campaign Volunteers Needed

All of our major campaigns are always looking for some volunteers, if you are interested in any more information on these campaigns go to our various campaigns or contact the specific campaign coordinators as described below.

Pesticide Free Yards - The founder of our local group Barb Kinnie, and current Chair of the Chinook Group, is the contact for this campaign. Barb is currently looking for some fresh ideas for this campaign so contact her directly to get involved in our most successful campaign to date.

Waste Management - The waste management group has had a great impact on Calgary's waste management policy, and is an integral part in getting the City's blue box recycling program expanding to meet the demands of our ever growing city. Currently, our program is looking at setting up school visits to talk to children about recycling. If you are interested please contact Matt Lorenzi or Rich Larsen.

Urban Sprawl - Our newest major campaign focuses on the impacts of urban sprawl on our lives. Recently touted the urban sprawl capital of Canada we have a long road to haul to overcome many hurdles to get the city of Calgary working on stopping sprawl. Brian Pincott, one of the groups co-founders and current treasurer, is working on this campaign and needs your help in creating more public awareness and attention to this issue.
Wilderness Issues - Currently, we are focused on the Castle Wilderness in the south-western corner of Alberta. We are currently in a coalition with several other local, national, and international organizations working to protect the Castle Wilderness. This is a beautiful yet abused area of Alberta that has a storied history and is in desperate need of protection. Dave Keith, is the head of this campaign and is looking for some new volunteers to help move this campaign forward in Calgary.
